Introduction AND   BACKGROUND

Mobile telemetry systems play a critical role in launch range facilities, ensuring the safe execution of missile tests and space launches by providing continuous position and event information from launch vehicles. Vambrace, Inc. recognizes the industry's demand for cost-effective, reliable, and adaptable telemetry systems, with a particular emphasis on the necessity of reliability for high-value launches. The historical context includes the groundbreaking Apollo Range Instrumentation Aircraft (ARIA) from the 1960s, which offered telemetry coverage in remote areas and over the open ocean. While ARIA's capabilities were impressive, they eventually became obsolete due to maintenance and obsolescence issues. Existing mobile telemetry solutions, such as the Tracking & Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) and military aircraft like the EP-3 Orion, face limitations in scheduling, multi-path interference, and adaptability to last-minute requirements changes. Consequently, launch ranges have sometimes resorted to constrained launch trajectories, resulting in increased costs and potential mission compromises.

Airborne Mobile Telemetry System (AMTS)

In response to these limitations, Vambrace, Inc. presents the Airborne Mobile Telemetry System (AMTS) as a comprehensive solution. Business-class jets are identified as ideal platforms for AMTS due to their long range, high service ceilings, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility in operating from various airfields. Leveraging commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology, the AMTS telemetry suite is designed to meet launch operators' data acquisition objectives while simultaneously reducing costs. Key features of AMTS include real-time data relay via satellite communications (SATCOM), onboard data recording, and the ability to optimize aircraft position in real-time using remote pilot interfaces. The system's configuration encompasses an internally mounted S-band telemetry receive antenna array, a removable hardware suite, and multi-function components for telemetry data processing, tracking, and communication.

AMTS exhibits versatility, allowing it to support various missions, including cruise missile tests, with potential capabilities for onboard range safety and communications relay. The detailed design of AMTS has been completed, utilizing 100% COTS equipment, and a prototype is currently under development for testing. An operational system is expected to be ready in a matter of weeks.
